Parent Newsletters

Dear Falcon Parents,

Congratulations to all of our Falcon 8th graders.  We can’t believe the season is almost over!  Thank you to all of our timers, volunteers, parents and grandparents.

After much consideration and strategizing we have chosen our conference team. It took us over 3 hours, but we chose a competitive team to represent Summit Middle School. We were pleasantly surprised to learn just this week that since there are only 4 teams this year instead of 8, we are able to bring 2 relays! We can still only enter 3 swimmer per event otherwise. We used the times from the current season to place swimmers in events that would maximize the points for Summit and make us most competitive. Congratulation to all those who made the conference team, and congratulations to everyone else for a successful season. We are proud of you all! We have seen so much improvement!  Our conference swimmers are:

Girls: Morgan Brown, Mia Herber, Kaylee Oberlin, Bella Smith, Halle Weaver, Chloe Bailey, Jillian Lynam, Hayden Shurtz, Maggie Steward, Kate Atkinson, Erin Blanton, Savannah Bloomfield, Macy Gray, Lilly Heine, Ripley Merritt, Emma Reust, Addi Smith

Boys: Logan Biddle, Ethan Wise, Thomas Hill, Jack Kuchmay, Austin McGrogan, Finn Parsley, Adam Pengelly, Alex Warner, Romeo Ceballos, Miguel Guzman, Dominic Johnson, Ben Morton, Cooper Prater, Evan Salah, Connor Smith, Harrison Smith, Drew Weiland, Hunter Wise

Divers: Hannah Brown, Ellie Murotani, Noah Clapper

The lineup should be attached and the only changes allowed are to substitute alternates if an alternate was specified.

If “ALT” is next to the name or “A” is next to the time, the swimmer is an alternate for that event.  Alternates will still warm up with the team.

We have swim practice for all girls and boys who made the conference swim team on MONDAY, Mar 12, 5:00-6:00 pm (Our time change is due to pool staffing.).  We understand there is a band concert that night and if swim conflicts with band at all, please fulfill your obligations to band! Practice for all boys who made the conference team on WEDNESDAY,  Mar 14, 5:00-6:00 pm. There is a choir concert this night, so please fulfill your obligations to choir if it conflicts with swim.

For the club kids that are swimming age group state next weekend and have practice 3-5, we would ask that you stay for 15 minutes to practice a few relay exchanges. If you are not attending ags, please come to Summit practice.

Divers, please refer to Coach Amy for practice times.

For all those who did not make the conference team.  The last day of practice is Friday, Mar 9.  If they did not make the conference team, we encourage them to try out for soccer or track!  If they did make the conference team, please inform the coaches of the obligations to swim before they go to their other sport.

There are no limitations on conference tickets this year! Tickets are $3/person and heat sheets are $2 and you will get them at the door. We need to supply 4 timers for both girls and boys conference. One sure way to get in for free and be in on the action is to sign up to be a timer!!!!

We need 2 more timers each. Thank you for signing up.

Unfortunately we will not be able to take anyone not on the conference roster on the bus with us.

Unless there is an allergy, we will be asking for only Summit caps at conference.  We don’t want to run the risk of a dq.  We have caps if you don't have one.

If anyone has pictures from 8th grade recognition, please forward them to Tara Warner at

Dear Falcon Parents,

Nice job this week.  We’ve been working on the little things that can make a big difference. The divers are looking fantastic as well. A few notes on attendance, the SACS policy states that in order for our athletes to be eligible to participate in practice or a meet, they must be in school by 10:55 am.  If they are absent in the afternoon, they must stay until at least10:55 am.  We rely on you to tell us if your student is at school or not.  Please let us know ASAP especially on meet days.

Next Tuesday is our last regular season meet. We will be hosting Bluffton @ Summit on Tues, 3/8 and it is 8th grade recognition. We will recognize our 8th graders after diving. Please have kids at the pool by 4:30.

Monday, Mar 5, we have practice after school from 2:30-3:30 because Woodside has a home meet that night. From 3:30-4:30 we will be making our banner for our 8th graders. Anyone who would like to help is welcome to meet us in the hallway behind the locker rooms at after practice.

We can’t emphasize enough to the kids to do their best at every meet.  It doesn’t matter what lane, heat, or relay they are in.  We are choosing our conference team after the meet on Tues. We are choosing by time, behavior in practice, attitude and are taking the fastest team possible.  This means that not everyone will go to conference. We will announce our conference team at practice on Friday, 3/9.  For those swimmers that do not make the conference team, the last day of practice will be Fri, Mar 9.

If this year is like previous years, each athlete that makes the conference team will be given 2 tickets, and these tickets allow you to buy tickets to the meet. Seating is very limited at Carroll, so you must have a ticket in order to buy a ticket to see the meet.

We look forward to seeing all club swimmers who have finished their season at Summit practice.

To those trying out for soccer or track, you must complete your swim obligations before you go to soccer or track. Let your coaches know! Notice below the new practice times for the week of conference!

We still do not have enough volunteers for the meet. Right now we only have 3 Key Club volunteers instead of 6.

Notes from Coach Amy: All divers practice Mar 7, 8 and 12.  Only Noah on Mar 14, regular time.

Upcoming events

Mon, Mar 5, swim practice 2:30-3:30, banner 3:30-4:30

Tues, Mar 6, Bluffton @ Summit, be at Summit by 4:30

Wed, Mar 7, all divers practice

Thurs, Mar 8, all divers practice

Fri, Mar 9, conference line up announced. Last day of swim practice for those that do not make the conference team.

Dear Falcon Parents,

We continue to be impressed by our 8th graders. As they pick up other people’s trash, recognize a need and take care of it, or support a teammate, we watch in awe.

Thank you to all who stepped up to volunteer at our Maple Creek meet. Special thanks to Deanna Shurtz who runs the computer like a pro.  It would be great if someone would sign up to help her out.

We have 1 away meets this week, at Carroll High School.  Because of the later start time for NACS schools, the meet start time is 6:00. Still confirming bus time. We will return home a little later, approximately 8:30-8:45.

Thank you for your hand written notes for the kids that do not ride the bus home after the meet.

The following week, we have our last home meet against Bluffton on Tuesday, Mar 6.  We will recognize our 8th graders in between diving and the start of the meet.  It would be great if our 8th grade parents could watch this meet instead of volunteer. (If they want to volunteer, that’s great too!) Hopefully we will have 6 Key Club volunteers again. That reduces our commitment significantly, so please sign up and THANK YOU KEY CLUB! Sign up at the bottom under the Bluffton meet.

On Thursday, March 1, at 6:00 before practice, we will decorate our 8th grade banner. So any 6th or 7th grader that would like to help is welcome to meet us in the hallway behind the locker rooms.

Here are 2 short YouTube videos that show Michael Phelps freestyle and butterfly in slo-mo.  Pick the best person and imitate him/her!  We would love it if your swimmer would take a look at these.

Michael Phelps slow motion freestyle. Notice the position of his leading arm when he breathes.

Michael Phelps slow motion butterfly. Doesn't that look effortless?

Mark your calendars!! May 5, FWO will be providing free physicals for school kids who will be participating in sports. All 8th graders participating in any high school sport must have a physical and all 6th, 7th and 8th graders participating in middle school sports must have a physical.  Pass the word along! This is the site you will need for the physical form.  The 2018/2019 form is not yet available, but you will find it here.

Upcoming Events

Wed, Feb 28, away meet @ Carroll against Carroll, be at Summit no later than TBD. Bus leaves at TBD.

Thur, Mar 1, 6:00 decorate 8th grade banner in hallway behind locker rooms

Tues, Mar 6, home meet, Bluffton @ Summit, 8th grade recognition, be at Summit at 4:30

Peace be with you and GO FALCONS!

Dear Falcon Parents,

This week has taken its toll on us mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.  We admire your kids for their strength, resiliency, and flexibility. They are working very hard.

We are well into our meet season now and time is flying. We thank everyone who has signed up to help so far, but we still need a few more volunteers.  Please sign up so we can leave your name at the door and you can get in free. We take parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, neighbors, friends, neighbors’ friends . . . . Lend a helping hand and you won’t regret it!  Please sign up under the Maple Creek meet, 2/22. We really need people to learn how to run the computer.  Our meets don’t happen without it.  We think we figured it out last week, so come, sit with Deanna, and become an expert!

There is no school on Monday, 2/19 so OPTIONAL practice is at the regular time, dive: 4:30-6:00, swim: 7:15-8:30.  Please have the kids attend if possible.

On Wednesday, 2/21, Woodside has a home meet, so we will not have swim or dive practice that day.

Our meet on Thur, 2/22 against Maple Creek is home. Kids need to be at the pool by 4:30 meet starts at 5:30.

Please remind your sons and daughters that if they leave their stuff in the locker room, they should lock it up.  They can also bring it into the pool area and leave it in the bleachers. We have reminded them.

We are still missing some transportation money.  If you have not turned it in, please turn it in soon.

We hope by this point you have all received your team suits.  We are very disappointed and will be choosing a new supplier next year.

Note to divers:

Optional practice Monday, regular time

Club divers please come on Tuesday

No practice Wednesday

Upcoming Events:

Mon, 2/19, OPTIONAL swim and dive practice regular time

Wed, 2/21, Woodside home meet, NO SUMMIT SWIM OR DIVE PRACTICE

Thur, 2/22, home meet against Maple Creek

Wed, 2/28, away meet against Carroll, meet starts at 6:00, bus leaves TBD

As usual, you can find this info on the website as well.

Don’t forget to sign up to help at the meet and GO FALCONS!

Peace be with you,

Dear Falcon Parents,

Congratulations to all the swimmers who swam their first meet on Wed! Thank you to all the parents, relatives, siblings and swimmers that helped out at the meet.  We can’t do this without you!  Please sign up on line to volunteer at future home meets.

Spirit wear looks absolutely great!  Our spirit wear is always so unique because every year it is designed by one or more of our 8th graders.  This year our designer is Mia Herber.  Well done, Mia! If you have any issues with your spirit wear, please contact Jen Ramos directly,

If you haven’t seen the locker signs, take a look when you come to the Crestview meet.  Thanks to our parents that personalized them and hung them up!

Pictures are after school on Mon, 2/12.  Please wear a team suit if you have one. Picture forms will be at the pool on Monday, but I will attach a scan so that you can get an idea of what your options are.  Should have handed out the forms earlier. Forgot. The students are to go to collab after school and do their homework! This will be a very long day.

Our first away meet is this Wed, 2/14 @ Norwell.  I think the pool is in the high school, but I will have to double check. Roster is at end of letter.  Below is the high school address.

1100 E. US 224

Ossian, IN. 46777

Remember for the upcoming away meets, if your child does not ride the bus home, you must give us a written note, not a text or an email.  A child can only go home with his/her immediate family.

If anyone is interested in singing the National Anthem at our home meets, please let one of the coaches know.

We are still looking for someone interested in taking pictures at our meets.

Probation cut off date is Monday, Feb 12.  We will get the list on Tuesday.

For our home meets, we will not release the kids to go until they have cleaned up the bleacher area.  That is the team’s responsibility.

If you are new to the distribution, you can find all of the old correspondence on the website.

Upcoming Events

Mon, 2/12 – collab after school, pictures 3:00, home meet against Crestview  begins at 5:30, done about 7:30

Wed, 2/14 -  AWAY meet @ Norwell, be at Summit at 4:00, return to Summit about 8:15

Mon, 2/19 – NO SCHOOL – OPTIONAL swim practice 7:15-8:30

Wed, 2/21 – NO PRACTICE! Woodside home meet

Thu, 2/22 – Home meet against Maple Creek 5:30

We will send out the tentative lineup for Crestview on Sunday and the tentative lineup for Norwell on Tuesday.

For our first away meet at Norwell, we will have a small snack and drink on the bus.  The meet should end about 7:30, we should be back at Summit about 8:15-8:30.  We will have the kids call from the bus when we are 10 minutes out.  They are welcome to use one of our cell phones if they do not have one.

The Norwell and Carroll away meet rosters are below.  The rosters are contingent upon eligibility. Please let me know if anyone is missing from the roster.

Peace to you this day and always,

Coaches Deb, Rachel, Amy

Dear Falcon Parents,

So much to say this week!  The kids are working so hard!

Big news! Our first meet is this Wed, Feb 7! It is an unscored, fun (but official) meet with Woodside. Kids must go home after school and return at 4:30 and bring a sharpie pen. They cannot wait around after school. Just a reminder . . . Swimmers MAY NOT leave after their last event, and swimmers MAY NOT change out of their suits until the last relay is over, we have cheered for the opposing team, and cleaned up the bleachers at the end of the meet.  Middle school swim is a TEAM sport. Divers may leave after diving. We will send out the tentative heat sheet on Tues, so swimmers can write their events on their arms before they come, but please be aware that we may have to make last minute changes on Wed.

If you haven’t turned in your $10 transportation money, please turn it in soon. Please make checks payable to Summit. We are also still collecting donations for snacks and the party; cash or checks made out to Deb Berghoff.  All yellow Athletic Medical cards must be turned in before the first meet.  Please return them to the office if you will not be at practice.

Our meet season is almost underway. Thank you to all the volunteers that have signed up so far J! Please volunteer for the meet on Wed and the rest of our home meets!  The kids are so proud when they see you. Sign up online at: and get in for FREE!!!!

We need people to learn how to run the computer during the meets! It’s not hard, it just takes a little training. Our meets will not happen if we don’t have someone to run the computer.  Get trained at the Jamboree so we are ready for our home meet against Crestview!  We are also looking for a volunteer to take pictures during the meets, then put together a slide show for the banquet.  This might be a great opportunity for an older brother or sister to help out.

Remember to call, text, or email if your swimmer or diver is not in school, or is in school, but will not be at practice. We do not get the attendance list any more.

Thank you for picking up your swimmers and divers on time.

Mon, Feb 12, the Athletic Director will be checking grades of all athletes.  PLEASE make sure your student has all homework turned in so that they are not ineligible.

Just a reminder that all academic curriculum and school sponsored events take priority over athletics, but participation on a school athletic team, specifically the meets, takes priority over club activities. The Valentines dance on Mon, Feb 5 is a school sponsored activity, so it is fine to go there instead of practice.  If you don’t intend on going to the dance, please be at practice!

There is no school on Friday, Feb 9, so we will have OPTIONAL practice at the regular time, 2:30-3:30.  Please arrive at 2:15.

Just a reminder that Monday, Feb 12 is our picture day and our home meet against Crestview.  It will be a very long day.  The kids will go to collab after school, pictures at 3:00-4:00 (wear team suit if you have one) and then stay until warm ups.  If you want to bring them a snack before the meet, we should have a little time between 4 and 4:30

Hayden’s Mom has made the most generous offer of 3, size 28, gently used, Summit swim team suits for FREE to anyone who wants them! Believe us, if we were a size 28, we would snatch those right up!  Contact Deanna at otherwise they go to Goodwill.

Now for some disappointing new.  Our custodians have informed us of some vandalism in the boys’ locker room that occurred on Thursday, Feb 1. If you are aware of anything, please let us know.

The custodians have also asked us to remind parents that the hallway next to the pool is not an area for younger brothers and sisters to run around.

Dear Falcon Parents,

Wow, did we work hard this week! We worked on all 4 strokes, flip turns, open turns, IM turns, starts, endurance and had our first fun Friday! The divers are working hard too!

Thank you to all that attended the parent meeting and to all that have already signed up to help.  We still need more help!  Please check sign up genius on our website.

Thank you to all who have turned in the transportation money.  Please send that in soon if you haven’t yet.  $10 Check can be made out to Summit Middle School or cash is fine.

Thank you for picking your kids up on time.  If they do not shower at Summit, please make sure they shower at home to get the chlorine off their skin.

Please make sure the kids are turning in their homework!  We still have a few weeks before the probation date, but don’t let those grades fall!

Our swimsuit store will close on Monday, Jan 29 at midnight!  Please order your suit and any other gear you need before them. Again, suits are optional . . . that is, you don’t need to buy a team suit . . . Here is the link and the password is: gosummit Not sure if they will be in before the Jamboree or not, but please don’t forget to write your names in the swimsuits!  They all look the same!

Our online spirit wear store will be closing on Monday also.  I see that the store will close at 11:30 am, not 11:30 pm.  Get your orders in! Spirit wear should be in before the Jamboree and we will hand it out at practice.

Team caps will be handed out at the Jamboree on Feb 7.  Speaking of the Jamboree, please know although all times are official, this is our “practice” meet.  We will be pairing our 8th graders with our new swimmers in the relays in order to give our 8th graders the opportunity to gain the respect of their younger peers and help our new swimmers as well. We have always done this for the Jamboree, but this year since we have so many first time swimmers it may be more noticeable. We are doing our best to prepare our new swimmers for the meet, but when you are in it for the first time, it can be a little daunting.

There are still a few emails that are missing, so if you know someone that is not on this list, please forward this along.  It will also be posted on the website.

Note to divers from Coach Amy: Practice next week, Monday will be Hannah, Romeo, Noah, and Aurie. Tuesday Romeo, Noah and Ellie. Coach Amy has parent/teacher conferences.

Peace to all and GO FALCONS!

Coaches Rachel,  Deb, and Amy
